Rapunzel's Tower

The birdcage interpretation of Rapunzel's Tower was developed in close collaboration with actress Rachel Connell whose intense portrayal of what is normally a minor character had a big influence on the concept design.

One of the big challenges with this production was to balance the gritty contemporary setting with the fantasy inherent in the fairytale themes in the script.

Rapunzel's birdcage takes a step toward the darker fantasy elements of the story and also creates as separate and distinct space for her and her adoptive mother the Witch to inhabit, something which is heightened by the fact that it is in full view of but ignored by the other characters.
